Havelock Lodge

A new family lodge on the Marlborough Sounds, seeking Passivhaus certification

Picture
This multi-generational lodge sits on a north facing elevated site, commanding sweeping views of the Marlborough Sounds. An expansive living, kitchen, dining space provides visual links to the incredible context, with sheltered living decks allowing exterior living, whatever the weather.

A ground floor master suite provides accessible accommodation, while enjoys the morning sun from the east. The upper floor consists of 2 double bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a large breakout room that leads through a ‘hobbit door’ into an 8-berth bunk room (our inner child ran riot!). To the rear a laundry & garage provide storage and services, with an exterior ablutions block to rinse off the sea water and fishing smells, before they get into the house!

The simple form of two mirrored and stacked wedges is wrapped in robust metal roofing & cladding, with feature timber cladding & benches to the covered living spaces, and vertical timber screens providing shade and interest.

The client wanted a comfortable, low energy, durable home. Through our consideration of performance throughout the design process, the home met the Passivhaus metrics without an issue, and the client decided to pursue certification. This hasn’t come with an increased price tag though, as due to the careful design, consideration of performance, and liaising with Fairfield to refine the specification, the construction cost is around the same as other architecturally designed homes, that are only just meeting minimum code.
